ABOUT THE TRAINING

Description:
From Theory to Presence: An EFT Day with Kathryn Rheem is a full-day, experiential training designed for therapists seeking to deepen their Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) practice by integrating foundational theory with clinical presence, embodied enaction, and skillful responsiveness in session. Guided by renowned EFT trainer Kathryn Reehm, this training bridges attachment science and the lived experience of emotion in the therapy room, supporting participants to move beyond conceptual understanding into grounded clinical confidence and fluid therapeutic presence.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Connect Theory with Presence
Articulate how attachment science and EFT change theory inform moment-to-moment therapeutic presence in the room.
  2. Track Emotional & Interactional Patterns
Identify core affective themes and interactional cycles (e.g., withdrawal, blame) and use these to guide intervention choices in session.
  3. Foster Safety & Attunement
Use attuned affective engagement to build emotional safety, promote vulnerability, and strengthen the therapeutic alliance.
  4. Move Beyond Reactivity
Apply strategies to help couples and individuals shift from defensive reactivity toward vulnerability and secure engagement.
  5. Enhance Intervention Timing and Impact
Recognize key task and marker points in EFT and practice responsive timing for interventions that catalyze corrective emotional experiences.
  6. Deepen Clinical Presence
Cultivate the self-of-the-therapist stance that supports compassionate curiosity, emotional balance, and clinical grounding amidst intense affective moments.
  7. Integrate Skills with Confidence
Strengthen clinical confidence to fluidly translate EFT concepts into effective, personalized interventions across diverse clinical presentations.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Kathryn Rheem, Ed.D, LMFT, is an internationally recognized expert in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), with more than two decades of experience teaching, supervising, and practicing EFT around the world.

She served as an ICEEFT Certified Trainer for 16 years and is now a Trainer Emeritus, continuing to help shape the next generation of EFT clinicians. Kathryn is also the co-founder of The EFT Café, an innovative online learning community supporting therapists in building mastery and confidence in real-world couples work.

Kathryn has co-authored two books and 15 articles and chapters on EFT and attachment. Known for her clear, compassionate teaching style, she has trained thousands of therapists across North America and Europe. Kathryn’s clinical expertise includes trauma, withdrawer re-engagement, and the integration of EFT with emerging modalities such as ketamine-assisted couple therapy.

Previously, Kathryn served for 11 years as Director of the Washington Baltimore Center for EFT and co-created Strong Bonds, Strong Couples with Dr. Sue Johnson, a post-combat deployment program for military couples. Across her career, she has worked at the intersection of research, clinical practice, and training.

Kathryn’s mission is to help therapists grow their skills with confidence, clarity, and heart—while never losing sight of the deep humanity at the core of EFT. Her teaching reflects a deep belief that EFT not only transforms relationships, but also reshapes how therapists understand themselves, their clients, and the healing power of love.

Diversity Statement: This presentation is informed by the ICEEFT statement and commitment to anti-racism. Specifically, this training includes an assessment focus on the CARE model outlined by Johnson & Campbell (2022), which guides therapist to evaluate attachment, emotion, and therapist alliance issues within the context of ethnicity, culture, and social location of families. Various examples are used through the training to illustrate the application of EFFT to families representing different social contexts.
