SUMMARY:Practicing Socioculturally Attuned Couples Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Expanding attunement beyond the couple to include culture\, power\, and lived experience.\n\n\nPracticing Socioculturally Attuned Couples Therapy\n \nCEUsCertificate of Attendance: 3 hours**Counts towards CEUs for AzBBHE.** \nAbstract \nEmotionally Focused Therapy invites clinicians to attune closely to emotion and attachment within the couple system. Yet couples never exist in a vacuum. Culture\, social identities\, social location\, and sociopolitical contexts shape partner relational power processes\, attachment experiences\, and clients’ relational realities. \nThis AZEFT community talk will explore what it means to practice socioculturally attuned couple therapy from a socioemotional relational therapy (SERT) framework/lens. Participants will reflect on how patterns in the larger societal context influence the problems that are reenacted in intimate relationships. \nThis workshop will use a clinical case to illustrate how sociocultural attunement to emotion can help partners develop awareness of the larger context influences in their lives and shift towards mutually supportive partnerships as a part of their therapeutic healing. Through this case discussion\, participants will learn practical ways to integrate sociocultural attunement into their clinical practice\, particularly within the use of the EFT model. \nKEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n1. Discuss how sociocultural context (e.g.\, race\, gender\, faith\, immigration status\, socioeconomic location) shapes relational power processes and emotional experience in couple therapy. \n2. Identify ways that power\, privilege\, and marginalization may show up within couple dynamics and EFT interactional cycles. \n3. Identify how sociocultural attunement can be used to support an attachment-focused frame. \n4. Differentiate between sociocultural attunement and cultural competence. \n \nABOUT THE SPEAKERLana Kim received her PhD from the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program at Loma Linda University with a concentration in medical family therapy. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and an AAMFT and OBLPCT approved supervisor in Oregon. Dr. Kim is an Associate Professor and the Program Director for the Marriage\, Couple\, and Family Therapy program at Lewis & Clark College. Her areas of expertise include culture and cultural identity\, gender\, social constructionist and contextual approaches\, couples therapy\, and parent-child relationships. \nCancellation / Refund Policy: In the event that you have paid for an upcoming event but are not able to attend\, you may request a refund up to 30 days prior to the event. SUMMARY:Intimacy Over Time: Navigating Sexuality Across the Lifespan with EFT
DESCRIPTION:Join sex therapist expert Dr. Laurie Watson to learn practical tools that address common challenges in maintaining sexual connection!\n\n\nDate: November 7-8\, 2025 | Time: 9am – 5pm MST both days\, Arizona time (MST) \nLocation: Franciscan Renewal Center \nCertificate of Attendance: 14 hours (7 hours of instruction per day; 1-hour lunch not included) \n**CE certificates are available for purchase if a free certificate of attendance is not sufficient (psychologists and out-of-town participants may be interested in this option). \n \nABOUT THE TRAINING \nDescription: \nJoin us for an engaging and transformative workshop with Dr. Laurie Watson\, a nationally recognized sex therapist\, author\, and expert in integrating sexuality and attachment science. This training is designed for marriage therapists looking to deepen their understanding of how sexual dynamics evolve across the lifespan and how Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) can help couples navigate these changes. \nDr. Watson will guide participants through the intersection of emotional and sexual intimacy\, offering practical tools to address common challenges in sexual connection while strengthening secure bonds between partners. Whether addressing the passion of newlyweds\, the complexities of midlife\, or the shifts in later years\, this workshop provides a comprehensive framework to help couples rediscover desire and intimacy at every stage of life. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn from a leading expert and enhance your clinical skills in fostering emotional and sexual connection! \nLearning Objectives: \n1. Three key couple developmental crises and their impact on sexual attachment \n\nTransition to Parenthood – Shifts in roles\, fatigue\, and child-centered focus can reduce erotic connection; often one partner feels rejected or abandoned\, which strains secure sexual attachment.\nMidlife / Aging Changes – Bodily changes (e.g.\, menopause\, erectile changes) may threaten confidence and desirability\, leading to withdrawal or overcompensation in sexual pursuit.\nIllness / Trauma / Loss – Chronic illness\, grief\, or trauma often disrupts sexual intimacy\, and partners may interpret decreased desire or function as rejection\, heightening insecure attachment responses.\n\n2. Differentiating between low libido and lower libido \n\nLow libido – A clinical or enduring pattern of reduced sexual desire\, potentially across contexts\, not just in the couple dynamic.\nLower libido – A relative difference between partners’ levels of desire; one partner desires sex less frequently than the other.\nGender nuances –– Male-bodied: Lower libido often carries stigma against cultural expectations; can trigger shame.– Female-bodied: Low or lower libido is more socially normalized but can still lead to feelings of defectiveness or pressure.\n\n3. Key assumptions of attachment theory applied to adult sexuality \n\nSexuality is not separate from attachment—it is one of the key ways adults seek closeness\, reassurance\, and security.\nSecure attachment supports openness\, curiosity\, playfulness\, and emotional attunement in sex.\nInsecurity (anxiety or avoidance) shapes sexual motives: anxious partners may seek sex to confirm worth/connection\, avoidant partners may detach to protect from vulnerability.\n\n4. Two examples each of hypoactive and hyperactive insecure strategies in the negative sexual cycle \n\nHypoactive strategies (withdrawal/avoidance):– Avoiding sexual initiation out of fear of rejection.- Minimizing or numbing sexual needs to avoid conflict.\nHyperactive strategies (pursuit/anxiety):– Pressuring or demanding sex as proof of love.- Interpreting any sexual decline as abandonment\, escalating protest.\n\n5. Using specificity in describing sexual encounters to deepen emotional experience \n\nAsk for detailed\, moment-by-moment accounts of what happens in a sexual encounter (e.g.\, “When you turned away\, what did you feel in your body?”).\nAssemble: Gather concrete details about touch\, initiation\, pacing\, responses.\nDeepen: Explore underlying emotions tied to those behaviors.\nDistill: Name the core longings (e.g.\, “I want to feel chosen”).\nShare: Facilitate partners voicing these distilled needs to each other.\n\n6. Typical sexual response sequences \n\nMale-bodied people: Desire → arousal (erection) → plateau → orgasm → resolution (with refractory period).\nFemale-bodied people: More variable; may begin with arousal before desire (responsive desire)\, with multiple peaks possible; resolution does not necessarily require orgasm.\n\n7. One possible block to therapist comfort in processing sexual content \n\nTherapist’s own unexamined beliefs\, values\, or sexual history (e.g.\, discomfort with direct language about sexual acts\, internalized cultural/religious shame).\n\n8. Strategy to deal with sexual flashback to increase safety \n\nGrounding and pacing interventions: help the triggered partner pause\, orient to the present (e.g.\, naming surroundings\, feeling feet on the ground)\, and create pre-agreed signals so that the sexual encounter can stop safely and be renegotiated without shame.\n\n \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nDr. Laurie Watson\, LMFT\, has her PhD in Sexology\, is an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and is further certified in and a supervisor for Couples Emotionally Focused Therapy. She has focused for 24 years exclusively on couples and sexual problems in her clinical work. \nAs an educator\, she has taught sexual attachment to therapists world-wide and for physicians at Duke and UNC Chapel Hill’s medical schools. She’s an expert advisor for many NC Ob/GYN and Urological practices in her home state. She owns and directs Awakenings Center for Couples and Sex Therapy in NC and oversees over 38 clinicians\, who she has trained in the integration of sex and couples therapy. Her doctoral dissertation was on using EFT to repair the sexual connection in couples who are experiencing one partner’s breast cancer and its devastation and the sundry ravages of treatment on the sexual relationship. \nIn addition to the podcast\, Laurie is a content creator on sexuality as author of Wanting Sex Again – How to Rediscover Desire and Heal a Sexless Marriage (Berkley Books of Penguin\, USA\, 2012) and as a blogger at Psychology Today and WebMD with >40 million downloads. Eight years ago\, she started the popular weekly podcast Foreplay Radio – Couples and Sex Therapy and for the past five years has been cohost with George Faller\, gaining approximately 12.6 million downloads. \nDiversity Statement: This presentation is informed by the ICEEFT statement and commitment to anti-racism. Specifically\, this training includes an assessment focus on the CARE model outlined by Johnson & Campbell (2022)\, which guides therapist to evaluate attachment\, emotion\, and therapist alliance issues within the context of ethnicity\, culture\, and social location of families. Various examples are used through the training to illustrate the application of EFFT to families representing different social contexts. \nCancellation / Refund Policy: In the event that you have paid for an upcoming event but are not able to attend\, you may request a refund up to 30 days prior to the event. SUMMARY:Working with Suicidal Clients: EFT Tools for Assessment & Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Navigating suicidal risk through the lens of attachment & EFT\n\n\nSPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR HOST\, PHOENIX THERAPISTS’ HUB\, FOR GENEROUSLY DONATING THEIR SPACE TO AZEFT. To learn more about their space and how it might serve your needs\, visit https://phoenixtherapistshub.com. \n \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP \nThis training will equip clinicians to identify high-risk factors for suicidality and thoughtfully integrate them into client assessments. Using an attachment-informed lens grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)\, we will explore how both the client’s and therapist’s attachment styles influence the assessment and intervention process. \nThrough experiential exercises\, participants will gain greater self-awareness of their own attachment patterns and emotional responses when working with suicidal clients. The training will then shift to practical\, clinically grounded strategies for suicide risk assessment\, treatment planning\, and intervention—emphasizing clear legal and ethical responsibilities. \nBy the end of the training\, participants will feel more confident\, grounded\, and ethically prepared to conduct effective\, attachment-informed suicide assessments in their clinical practice. \nCEUs \nCertificate of Attendance: 3 hours \nKEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nUnderstand the Risk Factors and Resources for Suicidal ClientsParticipants will identify key risk and protective factors associated with suicidality and explore how these elements inform a comprehensive clinical assessment. This includes integrating foundational theories such as the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide\, as well as current empirical research\, to enhance clinical insight and guide decision-making when evaluating suicide risk.\nAssess the Client’s and Therapist’s Attachment Style in Suicide Risk EvaluationParticipants will utilize evidence-based strategies to assess how attachment-related vulnerabilities contribute to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This objective includes recognizing how insecure attachment can lead to emotional dysregulation\, hopelessness\, and interpersonal disconnection—factors that increase suicide risk. Clinicians will also reflect on their own attachment styles and examine how their emotional responses\, countertransference\, and attachment-based biases can influence the assessment process and therapeutic relationship.\nImplement EFT-Informed Interventions for Suicidal ClientsParticipants will apply Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) principles to support emotional regulation\, foster secure connection\, and create a sense of relational safety for clients experiencing suicidality. Interventions will be grounded in an attachment framework that attends to unmet emotional needs\, while also de-escalating distress through attuned therapeutic presence.\nReview Legal and Ethical Responsibilities in Suicide Assessment and TreatmentParticipants will gain clarity on their legal and ethical obligations when assessing and treating suicidal clients. This includes understanding standards for documentation\, informed consent\, duty to protect\, and appropriate referral or hospitalization procedures. Attention will also be given to how to navigate clinical records in the event of a subpoena\, ensuring documentation is clear\, clinically sound\, and ethically defensible.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nRachel Thomas\, LMFT has been practicing as a therapist since 1997 and is a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist\, Supervisor\, and the Arizona EFT Trainer. SUMMARY:Weaving Culture into EFT: Embracing Diversity and Therapist Self-Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Embody how culture really matters in your EFT work\n\n\nABOUT THE WORKSHOP \nEmotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is one of the few relational approaches to therapy that emphasizes the importance of therapists bringing their authentic selves into the therapeutic experience. \nThis involves incorporating the full spectrum of their intersecting identities and lived experiences\, including those from their families and cultures of origin. Despite the growing attention to cultural matters in therapy\, there remains a lack of concrete guidance on how therapists can integrate their authentic selves and lived experiences into their practice. \nThis gap is especially pronounced in heavily manualized treatment modalities like EFT\, which often leave limited room for integrating diverse perspectives. Drawing on intersectionality theory (Crenshaw\, 1989) and the concept of self-of-the-therapist as discussed by Aponte and Kissil (2016) and Timm and Blow (1999)\, this workshop aims to: 1) explore cultural diversity as a crucial component of the self-of-therapist in EFT\, and 2) present a concrete framework for integrating cultural matters as part of the SOT experiences in the practice of emotionally focused therapy. \nCEUsCertificate of Attendance: 3 hours**Counts towards CEUs for AzBBHE for cultural competency.** \nKEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES \n1. Participants will learn to recognize and appreciate the significance of cultural diversity as an essential component of the therapist’s authentic self in Emotionally Focused Therapy. \n2. Participants will gain knowledge on how to apply intersectionality theory to understand and incorporate their intersecting identities and lived experiences\, including cultural backgrounds\, into their EFT practice. \n3. Participants will acquire practical strategies for integrating cultural matters and self-of-the-therapist experiences into their work with clients\, to enhance therapeutic alliance and outcomes in Emotionally Focused Therapy. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nDr. Ronald Asiimwe (Dr. A) is an assistant professor in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Minnesota. He holds a BA in Community Psychology from Makerere University\, a master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Oklahoma Baptist University\, and a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Michigan State University. Dr. A specializes in studying the impact of trauma on relationships and developing culturally responsive interventions for underserved communities. Dr. A grew up in Uganda\, Africa\, and has lived in the U.S. for 8 years. \nThroughout his career\, he has had the privilege of being published in top-tier journals such as Family Process and the Journal of Marriage and Family Therapy. He is also a recipient of several awards\, including the New Writers’ Fellowship award from the Family Process Institute\, an Excellence in Graduate Teaching award from Michigan State University\, and the John Douglas EFT Award for his pioneering EFCT initiatives in East Africa. \nHis research includes adapting Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for use in Uganda and Kenya\, exploring self-of-the-therapist and cultural experiences\, and studying intimate partner violence and fatherhood in Uganda. Dr. A serves on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and directs Conexa East Africa. A published author and award-winning scholar\, he actively contributes to national and international conferences and will bring his expertise to the Arizona EFT community in Spring 2025. \nDISCOUNTS \n** 20% discount offered to group practices of 5 or more who each register for the event; email us for the discount code \nCANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY \nIn the event that you have paid for an upcoming event but are not able to attend\, you may request a refund up to 30 days prior to the event. \nRefund requests must be received in writing via email to: azeftcommunity@gmail.com.
